Car and Trailer Test (B+E)
The B+E licence is a requirement following the changes in driving legislation in January 1997. If candidates passed their test on or after that date, their ordinary car licence (Class B) will allow them to drive a vehicle and trailer combination with a total Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) of up to 4.25 tons. (The MAM of the trailer must not exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle). For example, if you are driving a vehicle with a MAMof 3.5 tons, you may tow a trailer of MAM up to 750kg.
If you wish to drive a vehicle and trailer combination with a MAM greater than 4.25 tons they will require a category B+E licence.
The class B+E course comprises 2 full days practical driving instruction leading to a DSA test on the third day (half day). This includes ensuring that you are brought back up to test standard for car driving, developing awareness of larger vehicle area, reverse exercises, uphill and downhill starts, braking exercise and dropping the trailer safely.
